Ready This Time?
The city of Vancouver has apparently come up with a fool-proof plan to prevent a recurrence of last year’s Stanley Cup riots. This all sounds like a case of shutting the barn door after the horses have bolted. It seems like the city is trying to sell us on the notion that by cordoning off the inner core and implementing a more thorough police enforcement plan that all should be fine. That kind of response really tests my credulity this early in the morning. One, the justice system has only convicted and punished one of the offenders from last year’s mayhem and, two, it might be a little presumptuous and dangerous to start preparing for a Stanley Cup celebration, given the fact that civic officials were so woefully underprepared the last time out. Why don’t they just can the idea of a civic celebration and not give any rogue group a chance to repeat last year’s shenanigans. An effective plan might amount to no street celebrating period anywhere in the city leading up to and after a cup victory, if that ever becomes reality. To enforce that, bring in the military and stop fooling around with an undermanned metropolitan police force.
