The Canadian government is planning to hand out over sixty thousand medals commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which is being celebrated today. These medallions go to Canadians who have performed a service that brings honour and distinction to the country as a whole, so parliamentarians, for what it is worth, can line up for theirs too. Although it may seem like just another occasion for handing out a medal, it is nice to see fellow Canadians honoured for their contribution to the general well-being of the country as modelled by our queen. As an essential part of our national fabric, the monarchy has survived these past sixty years mainly on the hard work of this fine and distinguished woman. So let’s can the envy and rejoice that others have received some recognition, some more earned than others.
